Student Voices: Interview, Write, and Story Tell

Encouraging student voices and sharpening their writing skills is imperative for assembling a captivating yearbook that truly reflects the diverse perspectives and experiences within your school community. This can also encourage student writers to join the yearbook staff where they can be creative and expressive. While captions and quotes are essential, incorporating student-written articles on topics such as current events, personal narratives, or school-related matters can enrich the yearbook’s content.

Focused Workshops

Yearbook advisors can consider organizing workshops focused on interview techniques, fostering creative writing abilities, and enhancing storytelling skills to support students.

Interview Techniques

To encourage students to become adept at capturing the essence of their peers’ experiences, yearbook advisors could plan workshops designed to enhance interview techniques. These workshops could cover various aspects such as active listening, the art of formulating open-ended questions, and establishing a comfortable environment for the interviewees. By focusing on interview skills, students can gain the confidence and ability to unearth compelling narratives that embody the diverse experiences within their school community.

  • Active Listening Practice: Encourage students to actively listen to their peers and understand the essence of their experiences during the workshops.
  • Question Formulation: Teach students the art of formulating open-ended questions to elicit detailed and meaningful responses from their interviewees.
  • Create a Comfortable Environment: Emphasize the importance of establishing a comfortable and respectful environment for the interviewees to encourage open and honest communication.
  • Confidence Building: Focus on building students’ confidence in their interview skills, allowing them to reveal compelling narratives that reflect the diverse experiences within their school community.

Writing Abilities

Creative writing abilities among students can significantly enrich the content of the yearbook. Yearbook advisors can organize workshops that encourage students to explore different writing styles, experiment with descriptive language, and develop their unique voices. By developing these skills, students can effectively express the stories they’ve gathered, infusing the yearbook with colorful and engaging content that resonates with their peers.

  • Promote Voice Development: Encourage students to develop their unique voices by providing guidance and resources for self-expression within their writing.
  • Provide Resources: Gather relevant resources such as writing prompts, examples of different writing styles, and tips for descriptive language to assist students throughout the workshops.
  • Create a Supportive Environment: Foster an environment where students feel comfortable sharing their work and receiving constructive feedback to further enhance their writing skills.
  • Encourage Story Expression: Emphasize the importance of effectively expressing the stories they’ve gathered to create engaging content for the yearbook.

Storytelling Skills

Additionally, by focusing on enhancing storytelling skills, yearbook advisors can guide students in crafting narratives that are not only engaging but also authentic. Workshops dedicated to storytelling can delve into elements such as structure, character development, and the use of descriptive details to evoke emotional resonance. By refining these storytelling techniques, students can create narratives that capture the essence of their school community, preserving meaningful moments within the yearbook.

  • Teach the students that when they are crafting a story, it’s important to consider the structure, subject development, and descriptive details to engage the audience and create a memorable narrative.
  • Demonstrate how to refine storytelling techniques for creating engaging and authentic narratives to fit the space.
  • Practice with the students what it means to capture the essence of the school community and preserving meaningful moments in the yearbook

By following these steps, yearbook advisors and students can effectively enhance their storytelling skills, create compelling narratives, and contribute meaningful content to the yearbook. During the 2020-21 school year, my yearbook staff wrote more than they had in years past, and the book received high marks, positive comments, and praise during a yearbook feedback session with experts who provided critiques. The writing truly captured what the students were going through from their perspective.

Students who take part in these workshops will learn how to tell interesting and meaningful stories. This will make the yearbook more reflective of the different voices and experiences of the student body. The goal of these workshops is to help students feel confident in sharing their own stories and viewpoints so that everyone’s unique voice is noticed and appreciated in the yearbook.
